Cocaine, Alcohol, Love. What do these things have in common? All three can affect your brain in an addictive manner. New research has found that being in love or in a relationship can increase the neurotransmitter Dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is the "feel-good" chemical that gives you a feeling of euphoria. So, when the heart is broken there are actual physiological signs of withdrawal in those with addictive pre-dispositions. You may think your ex is acting a little crazy, but that just may be because love was their drug of choice.
